Mpira TV has generated about K192 million from the 2023 season against K123 million realised in 2022.
Football Association of Malawi (Fam) released a revenue report yesterday indicating that this year each team got K5.1 million up from K3.8 million in 2022 representing a 67 percent increase.
Total money shared by clubs is K83,173,642 while both Fam and Super League of Malawi each got K10,396,705.
The report stated that in 2022, Mpira TV broadcasted 108 games while last year, 256 matches were broadcasted on the platform plus Fifa+.
Fam Commercial and Marketing Director Limbani Cliff Matola said through the introduction of Mpira App, the association is now targeting a lot of revenue next season, than the one realised in 2023,
“We will this season have an improved revenue through Mpira App where football fans will watch games from their smartphones. We also expect to make more money through Fifa+.
“We will focus on optimising revenue growth through consolidating the free – to air package offerings, monetising Fifa+ and introduction of Mpira TV App which will increase access and provide convenience to many football fans,” Matola said.
However, the country’s giants FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers, while commending Fam for the increased revenue to the team’s, bemoaned what they said are high figures to the content producers and other stakeholders.
Bullets Chief Administration Officer Albert Chigoga said they are lobbying for more revenue to the teams this season.
“We have noted the increase in revenue that teams will get from last season’s Mpira TV initiative but we are of the view that content producers are getting more money than the teams.
“We are aware of high costs in producing and broadcasting the games but this has to be fixed,” Chigoga said.
On his part, Wanderers Chief Executive Officer Roosevelt Mpinganjira shared the sentiments.
“My reaction is this is a good development. There is an increase in revenue from the previous year. However, it is still baffling that those who are just administrators are getting the lion’s share than those who sweat on the sun,” he said.
Host content production in 2023 got K46 million against K35 million in 2022 while hosts broadcaster got K33 million against K20 million in 2022.
The total administration costs grossed K7,899,304 bringing the total expenditure to K87,650,631 with a net revenue of K103,967,053.
