Malawi Women’s National Football Team striker Temwa Chawinga registered her name on the score sheet as Kansas City Current shared the spoils with Houston Dash following a 1-1 stalemate in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) at Shell Energy Stadium in the United States (US) on Sunday night.
This is Temwa’s fifth goal in the league this season.
The Malawian is just two goals behind leading scorer Sophia Smith of Portland Thorns FC.
Temwa scored in the 24th minute of the match but Amanda West leveled the scores for the home side in the 71st minute.
“Kansas converted in the 24th minute, thanks to a left-footed cross from Vanesa Di Bernardo to Chawinga. Despite not hitting her shot clean, the Malawian forward got just enough on her shot for it to cross the goal line and give the Current a 1-0 lead,” Kansas City’s website reported.

According to the website, Temwa has contributed at least one goal in six of her seven career NWSL matches, which makes her only the third player in the league’s history to do so.
Temwa nearly grabbed the winner for Current in the 78th minute but a Huston defender slid in to save the situation.
In an interview from the US Monday, the former DD Sunshine (now Silver Strikers Ladies) striker said she was pleased with her performance.
“I have settled well here. The teammates and technical staff have really helped me,” Temwa said.

She moved to the US on the back of an impressive performance at Chinese champions Wuhan Jiangda, with whom she won three golden boot awards in just one season, inspiring the team to successfully defend the league title.
In total, Temwa scored a remarkable 63 goals for both club and country to top the global scorers’ chart.
She also helped the Scorchers to win their first ever Cosafa Women’s Championship, having scored nine goals which also won her a golden boot award at the showpiece.
Temwa was also named player of the tournament at the regional competition.
