Malawi has realised $277.3 million from tobacco within is weeks of sales, figures from AHL Tobacco Sales show.
The revenue is 79.7 percent higher than $154.3 million realised during the same period last year.
This comes days before close of this year’s selling season.
The revenue has been realised after selling 117.9 million kilogrammes (kg) of all types of tobacco, up from 73.1 million kg last year.
Tobacco Association of Malawi President Abiel Kalima Banda said the season has been impressive.

He was quick to say that all decisions about the industry should be made in the best interest of the farmers.
“In most discussions about tobacco pricing, farmers are left out; hence, the operations of the markets do not favour the farmers. Going forward, policy makers should make sure that farmers are involved and market operations favour them,” Kalima Banda said.
Meanwhile, agriculturalist Leonard Chimwaza has said tobacco remains a relevant crop for Malawi.
“This year farmers should be helped to produce good quality tobacco so that we continue relying on it,” Chimwaza said.
