The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has called for inclusivity in promoting clean energy sources.
Speaking during a two-day training workshop in Blantyre, UNDP Malawi Gender and Development Specialist Juliet Sibale said the idea is to help girls and women have access to clean energy.
Sibale said promotion of clean energy among the marginalised is one of signature solutions in the development of the nation in various aspects.
“We want to target their economic empowerment so that they are able to use energy in their homes or businesses,” she said.
Sibale said for a long time, women have been left out of the equation. She said research has also shown that there are a lot of diseases that come from using unclean energy sources.

“So we are trying to close this gap especially for those in the rural areas,” she said.
Principal Energy Officer in the Ministry of Energy Gift Chiwayula said the initiative by UNDP complements efforts by the government to ensure that no one is left behind.
“For now I can say we are trying to bridge the gap which was there before we emphasise that all gender groups should be involved in energy activities.
“We make sure that all groups are represented. I can say that we are really trying to tackle this issue head-on without leaving anyone behind,” he said.
