After successfully producing local girl Keturah’s self-titled album Keturah, veteran United States of America (USA) producer Harlan Steinberger returns to the country next month to work on a Sounds of Malawi record label.
The Grammy nominated producer, who has recorded several other well-known artists at his Hen House Studios, has been impressed with Malawi’s music having worked with Keturah hence embarking on the Sounds of Malawi record label project.
Jacaranda Cultural Centre (JCC) Director Luc Deschamps, who initiated Keturah’s mission to travel to USA to record her album alongside his wife Marie Da Silva, described the project as huge for Malawi revealing that once finished, it would be released worldwide.
“As promised last year when he came to Malawi for Keturah’s album launch, Harlan Steinberger is back in Malawi next month. We have a Sounds of Malawi Record label where 10 artists will be recorded,” Deschamps said.
He said Harlan will spend two weeks in the country and that he will record the artists at Jacaranda studio, Chigumula in Blantyre.

“We have a professional sound studio and that is where Harlan will do the recording assisted by our producers. At the moment, we are gathering the 10 artists and mostly, we are looking at authentic sound, traditional music, original music, sounds that artists have written in the past years and want them rerecorded,” Deschamps said.
He said after recording the music at Jacaranda, Harlan will edit everything and then finish everything at Hen House Studios before the release worldwide.
“The first album will be a compilation, but the idea is to take Malawi music to the world,” Deschamps said.
Harlan said his visit in Malawi was special and that he will never forget it.
