Malawi’s High Commissioner to Mozambique Wezie Moyo has urged local businesspersons and investors to make the most of existing and cordial diplomatic relations between Lilongwe and Maputo in advancing mutual development aspirations.
She was speaking in an interview in Tete, Mozambique, last week.
Moyo said the two countries have worked tirelessly in strengthening existing cooperation in trade, defence and security, energy and transport, which the private sector should make the most of.
She said Mozambique offers Malawi vast business opportunities as a gateway to the rest of the world through sea ports.
“The opportunities are very wide. Apart from available opportunities in the agriculture sector, there are also opportunities in the education and health sectors,” she said.
According to Moyo, at a recent trade fair in the country, about 45 local companies exhibited agricultural products where trade deals worth $600 million were generated.
She said there is high demand for agricultural commodities such as soya beans, rice, honey and groundnuts in Mozambique.
She said Malawi and Mozambique have been working jointly on several development projects in energy and transport sector, among others, which would facilitate growth in economic activities in the two countries
She said efforts were also deployed in addressing trade and other barriers including communication challenges to enhance interface.
Among other interventions, according to Moyo, many Mozambicans are embracing English while the Government of Malawi plans to roll out Portuguese and Swahili in its curriculum to improve social integration.
“We should sustain the momentum created at the highest level by our principals to strengthen ties between our two countries for mutual benefit,” Moyo said.
