President Lazarus Chakwera Tuesday took advantage of Kamuzu Day commemorations at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre to send across a message that the current administration is not getting out of power come next year.
Malawi is gearing up for Local Government, Parliamentary and Presidential Elections on September 16 2025.
His sentiments come after opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader Peter Mutharika told people at a meeting he addressed at Njamba Park in Blantyre on Sunday that, if elected party president at DPP’s elective convention set for this year, he would emerge victorious in the national poll.
“Do not be cheated by those who are telling you that we are getting out of government next year. They just want to steal from you and do not believe them.
“In October next year, I will be here continuing development activities,” Chakwera said amid chants from Malawi Congress Party and Tonse Alliance supporters.

Some government officials also cheered for the President.
Commenting on activities of the day, Chakwera said Malawians should continue learning from the Father and Founder of the Malawi Nation Ngwazi Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda.
The President said the founding president ensured that development activities spread across the country.
“It is rare to find governments that ensure that development activities are spread equally across the country. Dr Banda had no match when it comes to taking development initiatives to all corners of the country. He built Blantyre City and other infrastructures that we see today. These include roads, markets, schools, you name it.

“Leadership that develops all areas is crucial because it brings about unity among people and lays the foundation of a good future for its citizenry,” Chakwera said.
Chakwera vowed to sustain Dr Banda’s vision of developing Malawi.
“In honour of Kamuzu, I will not bow down to those who advance tribal politics but I will continue building bridges, roads in all the regions. Whether those who do cheap politics likes it or not, I will not stop building 10,000 houses for our security officers,” he said.pa
The President further asked people not to give room to those that promote divisions in the country.
“Do not be cheated. Do not despair, even though we have faced hurdles along the way, because what we agreed will surely come to pass. The future looks bright and we will ensure that we are still on track to fulfilling what we promised in 2020,” Chakwera said.
Chakwera was accompanied by State Vice President Saulos Chilima, Cabinet ministers and hordes of government officials.
The event, which was held under the theme ‘Kamuzu, the Legacy of Patriotism, Integrity and Hard Work’, was, for the first time, held in Blantyre.
It has been exclusively held in Lilongwe.

Representing Kamuzu’s family, Ken Kandodo said it was an honour for the event to be held in Blantyre.
“This means that the event is national because Kamuzu lived well with people from all walks of life. Kamuzu was patriotic and that is why he fulfilled most of what he planned,” Kandodo said.
He also honoured people who worked closely with the former leader, notably Mwanza Central lawmaker Nicholas Dausi and William David Kanyoni.
Local Government Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda also showered praises on Kamuzu, saying he was visionary and loved the country.
He further hailed Chakwera for continuing developing the country, in terms of agriculture and road infrastructure projects.
Chimwendo Banda also waded into the waters of politics, saying Chakwera would be in power until 2030.
