The World Youth Choir 2024 auditions in Malawi will be held at Chiwoko School in Lilongwe on Saturday.
Dan Kauma, who is the World Youth Choir recruiter and Lilongwe Community Choir director, said Wednesday that the country has not fared well over the years and that there seems to be a problem with music reading and theory.
“We are normally disadvantaged because we do not have a formal music school integrated in our formal normal school. We have pushed to teach a number of them in the past years,” Kauma said.
He described the World Youth Choir as a platform that is wide and that it has people from different cultures and countries around the world.
“This is a great opportunity to interact, network, build social capital among different professionals,” Kauma said.

He said there was a need to do something by integrating music in the country’s education systems.
“We need to build our teachers’ capacity in primary and secondary schools in terms of music theory or formal music where young people are able to read and write music. This will help expand their interaction skills and meet a good number of opportunities in their other careers,” Kauma said.
World Youth Choir summer session 2024 will be held in Weikersheim, Germany, from August 18 to September 8.
The World Youth Choir is an international ensemble of the best young choral singers from all over the world.

Established in 1989, it brings together up to 100 remarkable young talents, between the ages of 17 and 26, for a session and tour every year.
The choir has become a global symbol for peace, unity and harmony; being recognised as a Unesco Artist for Peace (1996-1998), as well as performing at the Olympic Games (1992, 2008) and Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony (2011).
The choir is created fresh each year, through a series of competitive national and online auditions, overseen by an international jury.
With the help of patrons and a local host, each year a session of the programme is organised in a different country.
The session takes place over the course of three weeks, during which the young musical talents that compose the World Youth Choir rehearse for up to 10 days and then tour in selected locations, under the direction of renowned conductors.
