Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has said 16 coaches have applied for the post of Technical Director (TD).
Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda confirmed the development Friday.
Gunda said the list comprises both foreign and local coaches but he declined to disclose the identities.
“At the moment, I can only say there were both foreigners and locals expressing interest. The process is at the stage of application receipt,” Gunda said.
The association advertised for the post in April this year saying it is looking for the person to lead the technical development with focus on transforming the game theme.

Fam wants a person with an ‘A’ coaching badge as well as a bachelor’s degree in sports, education, management or related field with at least five years’ experience in football development strategy models, strategic action plans and /or football structures and any other related qualifications.

National Football Coaches Association (NFCA) chairperson Aubrey Nankhuni said he expects Fam to select a person with vast experience.
“Our expectations are very high. We want the TD who will focus much on coaches’ development as well as grassroots football. As a country, we have talent but we have failed to nurture the players due to lack of proper programmes,” Nankhuni said.
The position of TD fell vacant after the association decided against renewing the contract of Benjamin Kumwenda, who served in that role for two years.

Kumwenda, who initially joined Fam as technical development officer rose to the position of TD after Romanian coach Mario Marinica was appointed Flames coach following Meck Mwase’s redeployment and subsequent firing.
Eventually, Marinica was also fired as Flames following poor results.
The position of the TD is very crucial in football. Among other things, the TD is responsible for the strategy, development and technical of the technical directorate.
The new TD will also be vital as Fam is working on developing a national football philosophy to give Malawian football an identity.
Early this year, Fam President Fleetwood Haiya said the national football philosophy will guide on how teams should play.
“We are doing everything possible to develop a style of play with which our teams will be identified in the long run,” he said.
Globally, Spain, Brazil and Italy each have their own distinct style of play.
