Five visual artists Sunday exposed the beauty of art and its significance to the development of the nation when they exhibited their pieces at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre in an art for tourism idea.
The five are Madalitso Ziwaoh, Samuel Ndalema, Maxwell Banda, Mayamiko Chalira and Tapiwa Mlinga.
Amaryllis Hotel, which has been instrumental in giving the creative world space to showcase their talents, once again gave the visual artists a platform as part of celebrating Tourism Month and the exhibition came barely a day after Malawi Tourism Council hosted a Street Carnival in the commercial city with the hotel among the partners.
“Malawi has massive talent in different artistic forms and, as a hotel, we will always be there for them and give them space. This time, as we are talking of Tourism Month, there are several activities we are involved in and art exhibition is one of them. Art is one of the important elements in uplifting tourism, hence giving the visual artists the space to exhibit their works,” Amaryllis Hotel General Manager Ramy Waheed, said.
Ziwaoh, who has exhibited in a number of art exhibitions and has won the hearts of the people with his works, said the exhibition started on a poor note with a few people present in the early stages before the situation improved later in the afternoon.

“Of course, we did not do enough, in terms of publicity, but the numbers improved in the afternoon. We are happy as visual artists to celebrate Tourism Month through this exhibition. Through our works, we are showcasing our talent but also showing the beauty of Malawi,” he said.
The artist also said, through the exhibition, they were encouraging people to keep the memories on a canvas as a souvenir.
“We need more of these platforms. As artists, we have a great role to play in uplifting tourism. We appeal to tourists out there with our works and, so, we need not be sidelined. We sell Malawi and we make tourists understand what Malawi is all about in all the angles including culture. This is why, in our exhibition, we have artworks and sculptures of beautiful sceneries of Malawi, traditional dances, beliefs and mode of transport,” Ziwaoh said.
