Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has asked the police to investigate what it describes as an attack on one of its parliamentary candidates in Kasungu District.
The party has accused the Alliance for Democracy (Aford) of orchestrating Monday’s attack on Chikondi Chisale, who is contesting the parliamentary seat for Kasungu Central constituency.
Chisale was reportedly attacked while on his way to a football tournament in Kasungu.
However, Aford has denied any involvement in the incident, with the party’s spokesperson Annie Maluwa insisting that those responsible were not members of the party.
Maluwa has instead alleged that Chisale was attempting to interfere with Aford president Enoch Chihana’s convoy, which was travelling to a rally with the party’s parliamentary candidate for the area, Ireen Katola.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lilongwe Tuesday, MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila alleged that party members are facing daily attacks from what she described as the ‘Blue Alliance’.
“This incident follows another attack on MCP members in Mtandire, Lilongwe, over the weekend. MCP will win the election; that is why they are resorting to violence,” Kabwila said.
She called on the police to arrest those responsible for the Kasungu violence and urged that Chihana be investigated, as he was present at the scene.
Kabwila advised MCP members not to retaliate but to remain focused on the election.

At the press briefing, Chisale alleged that his attackers stole K17 million, a mobile phone and footballs from his vehicle while he was on his way to a bonanza.
“I will pursue justice. I do not support violent or confrontational politics,” he said.
Meanwhile, Kasungu Police Station spokesperson Joseph Kachikho confirmed that law enforcers had launched an investigation into the attack on Chisale.
According to Kachikho, Chisale was confronted by two vehicles, from which men believed to be security aides for Chihana allegedly emerged, sprayed him with pepper spray and vandalised his vehicle.
