The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has urged citizens to join the fight against corruption, emphasising that every individual has a responsibility to report corrupt practices.
According to Sam Kambani, ACB’s principal corruption prevention officer, corruption hampers the country’s development, making citizen involvement essential.
Speaking at the Anti-Corruption Stakeholders Dialogue meeting in Balaka District, which was organised by Youth and Society (Yas), Kambani stressed the importance of collective action.
“For Malawi to win the battle against corruption in all sectors, we need to have coordinated citizens who report malpractice to the relevant authorities.

“We, as ACB, cannot do this alone without the collaboration of citizens. This is why we are calling on all individuals to play a crucial role in reporting these issues, as they have a huge impact on development activities,” he said.

Yas Project Officer for Anti-Corruption and Rule of Law, Jane Chibisa, expressed concern over the alarming rate of corruption in Malawi and called on everyone to lead by example.
“This is why we are involving various stakeholders to support reporting mechanisms for corruption in their respective areas,” Chibisa said.
Meanwhile, Traditional Authority Chanthunya of Balaka District has described the meeting as vital.

“We are really pleased with the meetings initiated by Yas. We believe these meetings will have a positive impact on issues related to development,” Chanthunya said.
The meeting brought together various stakeholders, including council officials, chiefs and civil society organisations, to deliberate on ways of combating corruption.
In Malawi, a large amount of public resources is lost each year due to corruption, which observers argue undermines efforts to achieve sustainable development and improve public services.
Despite various anti-corruption measures, studies indicate that the persistence of corrupt practices continues to erode public trust in government institutions and slows the country’s progress towards its development goals.
