The biannual Art in the Park returns to the stage with its 10th edition, to run from May 9 to 12 2024, at Four Seasons in Lilongwe.
Wildlife Environmental Society of Malawi (Wesm) runs the festival with other partners with the aim of showcasing works of visual artists.
Wesm Chairperson Nick Hall said yesterday they want Malawians to patronise the festival and experience the best of visual arts.
“For this coming event, we really want more Malawians to visit for the first time and discover that Malawi’s art sector is thriving,” Hall said.
He said they were planning exciting activities in addition to art.

“We have a big social media campaign beginning soon and, so, we ask people to watch the space,” Hall said.
He said it has been quite a journey since they started the festival.
“For us, the most important change since 2019 has been the progress made by the artists. Artists have improved and new artists are emerging.
“Perhaps this has helped as, at each edition, Art in the Park tries to raise the bar a little, to expect a higher standard of artists we select to exhibit their work,” Hall said.

He said that, last year in November, Art in the Park selected 33 artists from those that applied.
“This time, we have selected 45 artists. Some that were not selected last time have recognised that they need to do better and have succeeded. Other budding artists have heard about Art in the Park and have applied for the first time,” Hall said.
The theme for the 10th edition is ‘People and Environment’.
In another development visual artist Ellis Singano, who specialises in batik, holds an exhibition that opens tomorrow afternoon and ends on March 30, 2024, at Jacaranda Cultural Centre in Blantyre.
Dubbed ‘Identity’ art exhibition, Singano said the artworks set to be displayed reflect on the diverse aspects of identity including gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexuality, religion, and social class.
