Malawi Congress Party (MCP) member Lyness Mkandawire, who composed the famous song ‘Khalani Chete kwa Kamuzu’, is no more.
Mkandawire died on Wednesday at Mzuzu Central Hospital after a long illness, her son Chrose Wankhama confirmed.
Mkandawire worked with Malawi’s first president Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda and was one of the women who, as Mbumba za Kamuzu, travelled with the former head of State to other countries.
Also known as ‘Nya-How-Much’, the name she was given by Kamuzu while abroad, Mkandawire was also followed by many due to her song, which was mostly sang whenever Kamuzu was about to deliver a speech.
MCP North South Regional chairperson Joseph Chavula said the party has lost a senior citizen who was a source of wisdom to many.

Chavula said members of the regional committee, particularly under the women wing, were learning a lot from Mkandawire on operations of the party.
“She was our dictionary and always readily available to offer advice. She was humble and hardworking and always wanted the best for the party,” Chavula said.
Mkandawire died at the age of 95 and is survived by three children and grandchildren.
She will be laid to rest at Lusangazi on Saturday.
