A window of opportunity has opened for Ascent Soccer starlets Levison Munyenyembe and Precious Kapunda as they have been invited for pre-season professional trials with Afturelding in Iceland.
The two players impressed during the training placement in July last year.
The academy’s founder George Maguire said the two players deserve the opportunity to play overseas.
“We see Iceland as an interesting landing spot in Europe and a stepping stone to Scandinavia should they do well. They are (two) talented players who have worked hard on and off the pitch and in developing their English language levels to cope with this kind of opportunity.
“There’s a lot more to come from both lads for any club which can see their potential. Great to see Malawian players getting European opportunities as they can access that level of training and development environment to reach their true potential,’’ Maguire said.

Munyenyembe (18), who is from Mzuzu, is a fast, tenacious and hardworking winger-cum-striker with an eye for the goal with either foot whereas Kapunda (18), who is from Blantyre, is a technical midfielder with an impressive passing range.
Both players joined Ascent Soccer as 12 year olds and have graduated through the academy, most notably spearheading Ascent’s unbeaten South African tour in 2022, where Ascent Under-17 beat Mamelodi Sundowns 3-0 and drew 2-2 with Super Sport United U-20.
Afturelding, or UMFA, is an Icelandic club from the town of Mosfellsbær located just north of the capital Reykjavík. It was founded in 1909 and plays in the second division of Icelandic football.
Ascent Soccer is Malawi’s only full-time residential academy based in Lilongwe and has produced over 20 youth internationals for Malawi since 2018 as well as five female senior international players helping the Scorchers to lift their maiden Cosafa Cup in 2023.
