Central Region’s qualifiers for the National Bank of Malawi Mo626 College Basketball competition are scheduled to be concluded on Saturday.
Action in the K450 million competition resumed last Saturday after a four-month break with 11 matches at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe.
Three more matches are expected to be played at Macon Gym in Lilongwe this evening.
Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) General Secretary Peter Gomani said they are working towards wrapping up the competition next month.
“We want to finalise preliminary round matches on Saturday so that we know who has made it from our regions. We already concluded matches in the Northern, Southern and Eastern divisions. These are final games before we start the quarterfinals at the national stage.

“So, after Tuesday’s [today’s] matches, we will have the climax for the regional qualifiers this weekend. The Central Division had the biggest number of teams in the competition and it has taken us long to finalise its preliminary round matches. But we are almost there now and everything is in place,” Gomani said.
In today’s action, ABC will line up against defending champions Malawi Assemblies of God University (Magu) in the ladies’ category while in the men’s category, reigning champions Magu will lock horns with DMI Lilongwe before ABC and University of Lilongwe (Unilil) cross swords in an epic battle.
The teams will then return to the court on Friday in two groups each for the men’s and ladies’ categories.
The ladies’ Group A has Magu, African Bible College (ABC) and Natural Resources College (NRC) while Group B comprises Unilil, Bunda and DMI Lilongwe.

The preliminary round will be concluded on Saturday with semifinal, third-place and final matches.
The 2023 edition of the competition was launched in September last year but took a break in December because of differences in participating teams’ academic calendars.
