The country’s boxing fraternity is mourning the death of professional fighter Alexander ‘Cage’ Likande who succumbed to injuries he sustained during a motorbike road accident in the early hours of Monday.
Likande’s close friend Byson Gwayani said the accident resulted from a collision with a motor vehicle.
“He was involved in an accident on Sunday night when he was coming from Area 36 [in Lilongwe] where there were some bouts organised by Youth Boxing Promotions. He was then taken to Kamuzu Central Hospital where he died,” Gwayani said.
Likande came from Domasi in Zomba District but was plying his trade in Lilongwe where he previously worked at the United States Embassy as security officer.

Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board President Lonzoe Zimba described Likande’s death as a big loss to the boxing family.
“We are heartbroken. We are shaken with grief. This is a big loss to the boxing family because apart from just being a boxer, Likande was a trainer and during Sunday’s fights, he took a leading role in assisting Alick Mwenda and Mussa Ajibu to defeat their opponents. We were counting on him to lead the boxing fraternity in the future considering his contribution to the game,” Zimba said.
