An exhibition titled ‘The Aftermath of Cyclone Freddy’ by batik visual artist Ellis Singano has attracted positive feedback in the United Kingdom.
Batik is the art of wax-resistant dye on fabrics to create beautiful and colourful designs.
The exhibition started at Anti- Racist Summit, Theatre by the Lake, Keswick, on November 1 to 2 2023 and then will move to Studio 4A, Evan Gallery, Corney Place, Penrith, from November 25 to December 2 2023.
During the exhibition, there will also be the screening of a film from Malawi titled The Ants and The Grasshopper on November 29 2023.
The media has since highlighted Singano’s exhibition in Night and Day on www.cwherald.com with the headline ‘Penrith exhibition raising awareness on climate change following Malawi tragedy’.
Singano, who recently exhibited his work at the ninth edition of Art in the Park at Four Seasons in Lilongwe and 2023 Tumaini Festival in Dowa District, said he was displaying 16 pieces.
“This is a continuation of an exhibition that started at Kaliso Art Gallery in Lilongwe in August 2023,” he said.
Singano, who has been in the trade for more than 20 years, said he got a chance to exhibit in United Kingdom through an art fan, who got interested in his work when she visited Malawi.
“She thought of doing an exhibition in United Kingdom, the plan is to do the exhibition in many places because many people are requesting for it but for now we are weighing our options,” he said.
“So far so good, pieces are being sold and I am happy with the way things are progressing,” he said.
Keswick musician Annemarie Quinn, who has lived in the country since 2016, also helped in bringing the exhibition to Theatre by the Lake.
