A case in which an individual as well as Kalibu Academy Schools in Blantyre want the court to stop call-to-prayer recitals at a Blantyre-based mosque attracted attention of the public, especially Muslims, Tuesday.
Muslims and other interested parties attended hearing of the case at the High Court of Malawi sitting in Blantyre.
The case involves Asko Pesola and Kalibu Academy Schools, who applied for an injunction restraining Kachanga Mosque in Chileka, Blantyre, from reciting a call to prayer, commonly known as azan.
The claimants argue that the sound pollutes the environment through noise, disturbing students’ studies and interfering with the peaceful practice of people of other religions.

The matter went for hearing before judge Mike Tembo, who adjourned the matter to a later date.
This followed a plea by the defendant’s lawyer, Audrey Tolani, who said they wanted to add another party in the matter.
The claimant’s legal representative, Morris M’baya, also said they would like to study files of the case before filing their arguments in court.
Therefore, Tembo granted both parties seven days to prepare themselves for the case.
