Finally, Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma) has a new board which will be led by former Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) President Bishop Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango.
Mhango was part of the previous board led by Maureen Masamba but he flopped during the copyright body’s general assembly’s elections last year.
The new board, which has been dominated by musicians, comes into effect barely two weeks after the appointments that were made then were withdrawn following anomalies.
Mhango has retained the position of chairperson from the withdrawn appointments, which had names such as Ezaius Mkandawire, Donnex Muva, Apostle Enesia Chitheka, Symon Kamlaka and Deborah Ntopa as well as three ex-officio members namely secretary responsible for culture, Solicitor General and comptroller of Statutory Corporations.
However, the new board, according to the letter dated February 5 2024 which we have seen, has, apart from Mhango, names such as Mkandawire, who was also part of the previous board with new faces of Edgar Kachere, Wendy Harawa, Anthony Dumba and Ntopa.

Kamlaka of the Symon and Kendall fame, Muva and Chitheka Lewis, who were on the list of the withdrawn appointments, have not made it.
Kachere, Wendy and Dumba come into the board, having been skipped in the withdrawn appointments despite triumphing during last year’s elections.
Mhango said yesterday he was humbled to lead the Cosoma board.
“I am thankful to God. This means the government has trusted me. My experience also speaks volume. I will do my best with the entire board to grow Cosoma. It is all just about being focused and united,” the veteran gospel singer and guitarist, said.

In June last year, Cosoma held elections where members came up with names to be submitted for appointment into the board and the only name that has missed out now is that of Poetry Association of Malawi President Robert Chiwamba, who is said to be a civil servant hence not eligible to be in the board.
