The Chinese government has provided flour worth K43 million to the country, where hunger is ravaging communities.
The items, which include 1,320 bags of maize flour, were distributed to 1,300 people of Sonkhwe Village in Lilongwe District.
The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) distributed the items to the people on behalf of the Asian country.
Charge d’Affaires for the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, Wang Hao, said they were responding to the State of Disaster declaration which President Lazarus Chakwera made in March this year.

“We want to play our part in helping people who are food insecure,” Wang Hao said, adding that China and Malawi were on good terms.
He urged Malawians to work hard and utilise technology to achieve food security as climate change had affected normal agricultural practices.
On his part, Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs Charles Kalemba commended China for the support.
He said the government, through Dodma, was doing its part to reach out to those who were facing hunger.

“We are also receiving 2,000 tonnes of maize, and it is already on its way,’ Kalemba said.
He urged people to adopt irrigation farming methods as one way of ensuring food security in the country.
Kalemba further urged people to stop believing in handouts.
On his part, Senior Chief Kalumbu, in whose area the items were donated, said many community members were sleeping on empty stomachs because they had no food.
Kalumbu argued community members to embrace technology.
