STAYING PUT—Chester (left) and Chirwa (right) during pre-season training

Costa do Sol have extended contracts for four Malawian players Chikoti Chirwa, Lloyd Njaliwa, Yamikani Chester (midfielders) and striker Richard Mbulu ahead of the 2024 season.

The club announced this on its official Facebook page this week.

Apart from Chester, the three players joined Costa on one-year contracts, which expired at the end of last season.

However, Chirwa extended his contract by two years whereas Mbulu and Njaliwa have signed one-year contract extensions each.

Red Lions spokesperson Joy Khakona confirmed that Chirwa has extended his contract.

“We had fruitful negotiations with Costa and we are happy that they wanted to keep him,” Khakona said.

On the part of Chester, Costa exercised the one-year contract extension option.

His local representative Gift Mkandawire also confirmed the development.

“The club acted swiftly in accordance with terms of the initial contract,” Mkandawire said.

Chester moved to Costa after leaving Mighty Mukuru Wanderers at the end of his contract.

All the four players have already joined their teammates for pre-season training in Nelspruit City, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa.

According to Costa’s Facebook page, the team spent a week in Xai-Xai City in Gaza Province in Mozambique for its first pre-season camp.

The four players had an impact after they inspired the club to fourth position finish with 36 points from 22 matches, three points behind eventual champions Ferroviário da Beira.

However, efforts to speak to the players proved futile yesterday.

Mbulu scored seven goals for the club, five goals behind the league top goal scorer.

Chester had a good debut season when he scored four goals in the league for the Maputo-based club.

Apart from the four Malawian players, Costa extended deals for Obino Chisala, Gervasio Mafaite, Adil soj Jorge, Jorge Adriano, Sergio Lourenco, Anonio Buene, Leonel Carmelo, Pene Simango and Isac De Carvalho.
