One of the country’s high street banks, Ecobank, over the weekend handed over a smart Information Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory worth K25 million to Ngumbe Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in Blantyre.
The development comes at a time the bank is celebrating its 10th anniversary under the theme ‘Transforming Africa Through Education – Excel with Digital Skills’.
Ecobank Executive Director Weluzani Chingota said they are targeting schools that are lagging behind in digital literacy.
“We identified Ngumbe CDSS as one of the schools that need a boost in digital literacy. Our commitment to education and digital empowerment is not just a one-day event, it is a continuous journey. Ecobank is dedicated to fostering a prosperous and digitally empowered future, and we will persistently work towards this goal,” Chingota said.

Director of Planning in the Ministry of Education Victoria Geresomo acknowledged the existing gap in digital literacy in the country’s education system.
“This is a timely donation since the ministry has plans to enhance digital skills in schools. I want to urge all other private sector enterprises to follow suit and adopt a school or more where they can establish and equip ICT labs as Ecobank Malawi has done,” Geresomo said.
The lab is equipped with modern ICT equipment such as desktop computers, tablets and furnished with new desks and other items.
