Electricity Generation Company (Egenco) has said it will complete maintenance of its generation machines at Tedzani 3 by the end of this month.
It is expected to restore 31 megawatts (mw) of electricity, which the unit is capable of generating.
Egenco Chief Executive Officer William Liabunya said this on Sunday, when Natural Resources, Energy and Mining Minister Jean Mathanga toured the station.
Liabunya said most of the machinery used to generate electricity in the country, including unit 5 at Tedzani 3, were outdated, hence, the challenges.
“By the end of this month we should be able to restore the 31 megawatts [in terms of] power generation,” Liabunya said.

According to Liabunya, Egenco is also making efforts to diversify power sources from hydropower, to solar and thermos electricity, with some stations already set in place.
It targets to increase the electricity generation capacity from the current 444.5mw to 2343.67mw by 2040.
In an interview on the sidelines, Mathanga hailed Egenco’s efforts in ensuring stability in power supply.
Mathanga said the ministry had negotiated with the Treasury to ensure enough funding towards the energy sector.

“Energy is a critical component of this nation. The government realises that and the Ministry of Finance has promised to prioritise payments—I am talking about the allocation of forex to our sector— towards the importation of these spare parts,” Mathanga said.
