By Sam Banda Jnr & Jonas Nyasulu:

The arty domain has more to offer this weekend with several activities lined up by organisers including a giants memorial show spearheaded by Nyamithambo Arts Palace Friday at Bangula Trading Centre in Nsanje.

The memorial show is a warm-up to the Khulubvi Arts and Cultural Festival, now in its third edition, to be held at Nsanje Prison Ground in June this year.

Nyamithambo Arts Palace proprietor Eric Trinta, who is also an arts activist, said on Wednesday that the giants memorial show is aimed at honouring fallen Shire Valley giants for immense contributions they made to the music industry in the country.

“We have the Khulubvi Arts and Cultural Festival coming up but, then, we thought we should warm up with a memorial show to celebrate the lives of our fallen artists, who have contributed immensely to the growth of the creative sector in the country as well as the festival,” Trinta said.

He said since they started the festival, they have benefited a lot from the talents of the fallen artists, citing Katelele Ching’oma, who died in January this year.

“Katelele Ching’oma has always been with us and last year he performed at the festival. We thought before holding this year’s Khulubvi Arts and Cultural Festival, we should hold a memorial show to celebrate his life as well as other artists such as Joseph Tembo, Grace Chinga and Novida JC,” he said.

Some of the artists set to perform at the memorial show include Jay Maga, Thifu, Sena Universe, Soul Classic band and Gibo Pearson.

Khulubvi Arts and Cultural Festival will run from June 28 to 30 2024 under the theme ‘Shire Valley: Time to Shine and Empower our People’.

Trinta, who has Nyamithambo Palace in Lilongwe and Nsanje, called upon people to patronise the memorial and celebrate the lives of the Shire Valley fallen artists.

He said after the memorial show, people should watch the space for Khulubvi Arts and Cultural Festival.

“We are making headway, in terms of preparations, this year. We are continuing from where we left off during the second edition. We are looking forward to giving people more this year in terms of traditional dances and music. This is all about promoting and preserving culture,” Trinta said.

In another development, St Patricks International Academy in Blantyre will on Sunday witness a battle of spellers during the regional competition.

The competition, which is aimed at propelling reading and writing culture, will attract several schools in the Southern Region.

Malawi National Spelling Bee founder Lewis Mbaula said Thursday that all was set for the regional competition and that they were looking forward to a great outing.

“Schools are ready and we expect another exciting battle,” Mbaula said of the competition that has gained mileage since its inception.

The commercial city will tomorrow also play host to a Blantyre Farmers Market to be held at Glasshouse Sustainability Centre with several activities set to take centre stage.

Salima by what organisers have indicated public demand, will feature Kell Kay and Teddy Makadi tomorrow at Ubunthu Lodges and Guest House.

In Lilongwe, artist Gift Mwandama will this weekend launch the Black Flame Ink Tattoo Studio with several activities including a live tattoo demonstration set to light the event.

Black Flame is located at Kweza Creative hub, led by poet Q Malewezi.
