Former Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) president Susan Namangale has donated two complete chess sets [chessboard and pieces] to Times Group and The Nation Newspaper.
Namangale presented the donations to both media houses through a representative Friday.
The Malawi National Council of Sports Board Chairperson made the donation as she believes chess helps in cognitive thinking.
“So it is called sharing the love of chess. I have been spreading this love to 25 districts in Malawi and 176 centres across Malawi and so could not miss. Times Group has been supportive to our chess work.
“We present the chess set as a simple tool for strategy and decision making. To face the future and be competitive, Times needs to be strategic and move to the next level of the business game and position itself with a winning advantage,” the Dadaz Chess Club founder said.

Namangale, through her strategic partners, intends to distribute one million chess sets by 2030.
“I am an ambassador for the Gift of Chess, a US charity whose goal is to distribute one million chess sets by 2030. I positioned Malawi to benefit from this distribution and I take the lead in this project. “Using these chess sets, I have taken chess to 16 prisons in Malawi and for the first time, prisoners participated in an online intercontinental chess championships, using chess as a tool for rehabilitation because a mistake in chess does not mean a loss, as one can play another better move and win,” she said.
Namangale has also launched chess for street children believing that the simple tool of a chess set can unlock potential.
Meanwhile, Times Socials coach Yankho Seunda said the donation was timely as they plan to diversify.

“We are well known for having a strong football team. Now, we will show the world that we are equally good when it comes to chess. This is in line with our diversification plan because we are extending to other sporting disciplines,” Seunda said.
During the official launch of the chess set, Times Socials coach Yankho Seunda defeated Sam Banda jnr.
Meanwhile, Nation Publications Limited Sports Editor Garry Chirwa also hailed Namangale for donating the chess set to the institution.
