Football Association of Malawi (Fam) says it has stepped up efforts to recruit a permanent coach for the Malawi National Football Team by the end of this month.
This follows a meeting between members of the Fam Technical Sub-Committee and Emergency Committee in Lilongwe last week.

Chairperson for the Fam Technical Sub- Committee Madalitso Kuyera, who is also the association’s first vice president, confirmed the development Tuesday.
Kuyera said Fam President Fleetwood Haiya had mandated the technical sub-committee to expedite the process of hiring a permanent coach.
“We, as a technical sub-committee, are expected to meet this weekend to discuss the matter.

“Thereafter, we will make recommendations to the Fam Executive Committee,” Kuyera said.
The Flames are expected to face Namibia in the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers in March.
Malawi are fourth in Group H with six points from four matches, six points behind leaders Tunisia.
Immediate-past FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Coach Kalisto Pasuwa is the favourite to take over from Patrick Mabedi.

But Kuyera said the association was casting its net wider.
“Pasuwa did well during the two matches but we want to look at all the available options,” he said.
Pasuwa left Bullets after six years—which was basically at the end of his contract—and went back to Zimbabwe for holiday.
The Zimbabwe Warriors former coach is also linked with newly promoted Scotland Football Club.
However, his local representative Felix Ngamanya Sapao ruled out the possibility of Pasuwa joining Scotland.
“At the moment, we are not discussing anything with any team. Pasuwa is on holiday for now,” Sapao said.
Apparently, Tonderai Ndiraya is the current coach for Scotland.
Fam has already started engaging the government, through the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS), to finalise the process of recruiting a permanent coach.
The position of Flames coach fell vacant after Fam sacked Mabedi due to poor results in all competitions.
Following Mabedi’s exit, Fam appointed Pasuwa as interim coach.
He was tasked to lead the Flames in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) dead-rubber qualifiers.
Pasuwa helped Malawi to beat Burkina Faso 3-0 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe after a goal-less stalemate against Burundi in Ivory Coast.
Malawi finished the Afcon qualifiers with four points, six points behind Burkina Faso, who have qualified, alongside Senegal, for this year’s finals in Morocco.
