Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has said it will review and restructure the Mpira Television concept to maximise revenue for clubs in domestic football.
This was approved during the association’s first quarterly executive committee meeting held in Mangochi on Saturday.
The current Mpira TV model has not benefitted Super League teams, having received peanuts since the deal started.
“To review and restructure Mpira TV and disburse Mpira TV revenue to Super League clubs before the 2024 season commencement,’’ reads a resolution from Saturday’s meeting.
This could be good news to Super League clubs ahead of the start of the TNM Super League season on April 6. On top of that, clubs will get K20 million each as subvention in the forthcoming season.

During the 2022 season, according to Fam, the TV deal grossed K123 million in broadcasting rights of which K61.1 million was total expenses whereas K21.1 million was net revenue.
However, the association is yet to announce how much was generated through the deal in the 2023 football season.
On behalf of clubs, Sulom President Gilbert Mitawa said it was a welcome development.
“It is a very positive and progressive development because our intention is to see the game develop and it can develop if we maximise all revenue resources including TV rights,’’ Mitawa said.

The reviewing and restructuring of Mpira TV is also a good development for broadcasters, who had complained that the playing field was not level in the current set up.
Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Director General George Kasakula hailed Fam for accepting to review the deal.
“This is a very fantastic development. They should level the playing field and see whether the model is working for Malawi football,’’ Kasakula said.
Before his election as Fam President, Fleetwood Haiya promised to review the deal to build a model that is transparent to ensure it maximises gains for clubs.
In the current model, Fam awarded the contract to Mibawa Studios as content producers of live football matches including the TNM Super League.
Since 2022, domestic matches have been beamed on Mpira. On top of that, matches are beamed on Fifa+ TV channel.
