Flames and Orlando Pirates striker Gabadinho Mhango got a timely boost ahead of the Soweto derby this weekend when his goal won the award for January in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
Mhango, the leading goal scorer in the PSL with 14 goals this season, won the award with a wonderful goal he scored during the 4-1 victory over Polokwane City FC.
He recently won the Player of the Month award for January when he scored five goals in six consecutive PSL games but Mhango has bagged the award for the goal of the month award for January.
PSL confirmed on Twitter Tuesday.
“Congratulations to Pirates striker Mhango, the Absa Premiership Goal of the Month winner for January 2020,” read the statement.
Pirates also congratulated Mhango for his exploits.
“Congratulations to the red-hot Mhango who has been crowned with the January Absa Premiership Goal of the Month for his scorcher against Polokwane City FC,” Pirates also Twitted.
The former Nyasa Big Bullets striker is facing stiff competition to win the Golden Boot Award as several players are just few goals away from him.
Samir Nurkovic of Kaizer Chiefs, Bruce Grobler and Bongani Ntuli of Amazulu have each 11 goals in the PSL this season.
The Malawian has been in form in the PSL this season surpassing his best ever goal tally since moving to South Africa in 2013.
Mhango netted nine goals in his debut season while playing for Bloemfontein Celtic before scoring the same number of goals for Bidvest Wits when they won the Absa Premiership in 2016.
However, the Malawian is still four goals away from equaling Essau Kanyenda’s goal tally in the PSL when he scored 18 goals.
