In a sudden twist of events, Super League of Malawi (Sulom) acting President Gilbert Mittawa is expected to take over the post unopposed when the association holds an elective extra-ordinary general meeting in Lilongwe on Saturday.
Returning officers Crowe J&W released the list of nominated candidates for the posts of president and executive member Monday.
The posts fell vacant after Fleetwood Haiya and Daudi Mtathiko were elected Football Association of Malawi president and executive member, respectively, in December last year.
Deadline for nominations was Friday, March 15.
According to the list, former Sulom executive member Charles Manyungwa has secured nominations and will face William Nhlane and Isaac Mdindo for the executive member post.

However, Mittawa has defied odds after 15 clubs out of 16 Super League teams nominated him.
Surprisingly, some delegates objected to Mittawa’s taking over at the body’s annual general meeting in Lilongwe on March 2, saying it was a breach of provisions of Sulom’s constitution to fill vacant positions without proper notice of the elective general assembly.
However, Mittawa is the only presidential candidate that has secured nominations.
“Pursuant to Article 21(2) of the Super League of Malawi Constitution, Crowe J&W, as retaining auditors, and conferred with the powers to oversee the nomination process of the executive members to contest at an annual general meeting and be elected into the Sulom Executive Committee hereby release the nominated names by the Super League teams.

“Crowe J&W is therefore advising all nominated aspirants to submit their passport size photo and proof of payment of the nomination fees to chifundo@crowe.mw,” the press release, which has been signed by one of the firm’s directors Chifundo Makande, who doubles as audit manager, reads.
Meanwhile, Mittawa has said he is delighted that the clubs stuck to their decision.
“Sulom is made up of teams. As we were going for the AGM, the teams did not nominate anyone, which was an indication that the teams wanted me to continue serving in the capacity.
“However, some two or three delegates queried during the AGM that we should hold elections even though they did not nominate anyone. Consequently, we followed the constitution and I have been given a vote of confidence. This shows that the decision which the teams made earlier was sincere; no wonder, the status quo,” Mittawa said.
Mittawa said he would continue implementing the manifesto which Haiya left upon his election to Fam.
“A good builder cannot destroy a good foundation built by others. I am glad that Fam President Fleetwood Haiya left a good foundation when he was at Sulom. We will continue implementing the manifesto which is to revive, rebrand and reform the league,” Mittawa said.
