The Ministry of Energy has initiated the review of the National Energy Policy of 2018 to incorporate emerging issues, including technological advancements, The Daily Times has learned.

Responsible minister Ibrahim Matola disclosed that this is being done to scale up investments as Malawi gears up to achieve universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy by 2030.
This is in line with Sustainable Development Goal number 7.
“My ministry has initiated the review process because it understands that structural, regulatory and policy reforms are key to attracting investments in the energy sector. We are doing that fully aware of the importance of flexibility and sustainability.

“Most importantly, in order for the country to achieve Malawi 2063 vision goals, in terms of increasing energy access, there is a need for the timely review of the Energy Policy because it has to encompass new technology,” Matola said.
He added that they are consulting stakeholders on the issue.
“I am aware of some bottlenecks we are grappling with and these are preventing quicker and bigger renewable energy investments in the country and we will continue to engage stakeholders until an ideal enabling environment is attained,” Matola said.
Meanwhile, German Ambassador to Malawi Ute König has pledged continued support to Malawi.

She said it was important to have the policy review as that gives room for fresh ideas to be included in the policy.
“As the German Government, we would like to reconfirm our commitment to continue supporting the Malawi Government in achieving its established climate goals through this and other current and future initiatives.
“We will be happy to be part and parcel of the consultation process so as to help each other on the issue of sustainable energy,” Konig said
