Former Football Association of Malawi (Fam) vice president James Mwenda and current executive committee member Christopher Kuyera have come out in the open to challenge incumbent vice president Jabbar Alide for the post.
The development comes ahead of Fam’s elections set for December 16.
Fam Second Vice President Othaniel Hara also has to brace for a fight as Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) Chairperson Lameck Zetu Khonje is also eyeing the position.
Alide said he is ready to face his opponents, having served his first term at Mpira House.
“I have realised that there is no shortcut in terms of how one can handle issues that arise in the administration of the FA. Experience in the management of the game is very important. In my view, one needs to first garner this experience before thinking about taking a bigger role,” he said.

Kuyera said it was time for Fam to enforce reforms in order to take football to another level.
“Fam needs to be run as a reformed organisation and not as an individual estate. I will therefore foster reforms on how to run and administer the FA with the help of whoever will be my president,” he said.
Mwenda only confirmed that he would contest but did not state what he would bring into the game.
Hara said he was aware of the interest in his post but said he will defend it as he still has unfinished business at Fam.

“As second vice president in the Walter Nyamilandu administration, I held different positions of responsibilities. In my time as chairman of the Finance and Administration Committee, we worked on a number of areas that needed improvement, including Fam’s policies. In consultation with affiliates, we also increased their subvention which trickled down to all affiliates including TNM Super League teams,” he said.
Khonje lost the vote on the same position to Hara during the last polls but NRFA General Secretary Masiya Nyasulu confirmed that his boss was doing a lot on the ground to ensure that he triumphs this time.
“My chairperson is in a management meeting right now but he is doing quite a lot in terms of preparing for these elections. We are very confident that he has done his homework and nothing will stand in his way,” Nyasulu said.
The race for executive member positions has contestants such as Mervis Mangulenje, Ernest Maganga, Raphael Humba, Tiya Somba Banda and Malinda Chinyama.
The current executive committee members are Felistus Dossi, Muhammad Selemani, Rashid Mtelera, Madalitso Kuyera and Chimango Munthali.
Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda said nominations for candidates to stand for various positions on December 16 are underway.
