Japanese entrepreneurs have expressed interest in investing in the various sectors of the country’s economy as Lilongwe and Tokyo are working on enhancing trade and investment ties.

About six Japanese companies are in the country engaging local counterparts, operators and the authorities on prospects in agriculture, manufacturing and processing.

On Monday, Japanese Ambassador to Malawi Naito Yasushi hosted the Japanese and local businesses to a networking event at his in Lilongwe.

Industrialisation, Business, Trade and Tourism Minister Simon Itaye and other Cabinet ministers attended the event.

Yasushi rated Malawi as an important partner.

He said his office was committed to serving as a bridge between the two countries.

“We will, therefore, continue to strengthen our development cooperation, including in infrastructure, energy, education, agriculture, manufacturing and social sectors, to make sure our cooperation will accelerate Malawi’s effort for sustainable and inclusive development aligned to the Malawi 2063 [vision],” he said.

In his address, Itaye said ties between investors from the two countries would help propel growth and development.

He singled out sectors such as agriculture, mining, tourism and manufacturing, citing them among priority areas for investment.

“We, therefore, extend a warm invitation to Japanese investors, business leaders and companies to explore these immense wealth of opportunities our country offers and [also look at] other areas including in food supply chain management, logistics and technology transfer,” Itaye said.

Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry Chief Executive Officer Daisy Kambalame said the private sector was positioned to partner with Japanese counterparts for the attainment of growth goals.
