University of Malawi (Unima) Vice Chancellor Professor Samson Sajidu has warned graduates about the dangers of corruption, saying it derails national development and disproportionately affects vulnerable people.
Sajidu said this Wednesday at the Great Hall in Zomba during Unima’s second congregation ceremony, where more than 2,000 students graduated.
He urged the graduates to be responsible citizens and uphold integrity in their professional and personal lives.
“Let the graduates be good citizens. They are done with the education sector and must desist from corruption and be responsible. Choose honesty over shortcuts and integrity over personal gain,” Sajidu said.

He also urged graduates who benefited from student loans to repay the money to the Higher Education Students Loans and Grants Board so that other students could benefit.

Unima Council Chairperson Benedicto Okomaatani Malunga said corruption must not be tolerated.
“To whom more is given, a lot is expected. University students are here for us to cultivate responsible leaders. They must work professionally. We expect them to deliver with diligence,” he said.
Malunga said Unima had strengthened discipline within its systems, stressing that strong disciplinary measures were necessary for the institution to succeed.
Female graduates accounted for 42 percent of the graduating class.

Nathan Majawa, who graduated with a Master of Media Communication in Development with distinction, said he was happy with his achievement.
