President Lazarus Chakwera Thursday had a phone conversation with Ukraine leader Volodymyr Zelensky, in which the two leaders spoke on the need to strengthen bilateral ties.
Presidential Press Secretary Anthony Kasunda said the two leaders also discussed the issue pertaining to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“President Chakwera reiterated to President Zelensky his position that lasting peace in Ukraine will come through contact and dialogue with Russia, and that Malawi has a vested interest in supporting those peace-making efforts both on principle, as a peace-loving nation, as well as in the pragmatic quest of Malawi’s economic interests, such as the price of fuel and fertilisers that have been affected worldwide by the war,” Kasunda said.
He said, in this regard, Chakwera expressed his desire for Malawi and Ukraine to deepen diplomatic ties, citing economic cooperation in the areas of food production, education and digitisation among possible areas of connection.
