A Finnish non-governmental organization, Liike Sports has partnered with Uefa Foundation to empower school going children at Goliati Secondary and Primary Schools in Thyolo district, with leadership skills, using sports to enhance love for education.
On Thursday last week, over 20 students graduated from a week-long seminar.
Through the project, students are being trained in life skills, health education, and inclusion in education.
According to Liike Sports and Development Executive Director, Ari Koivu, the project will last six months.
“The students who are our peer leaders have been empowered with different skills in health and sports leadership which they will also impart to others. This is aimed at encouraging students to enroll in school using football and netball games,” Koivu said.

Meanwhile, one of the participants Flora Malota said the use of sports to push more student enroll into schools was workable.
“We discovered that many students fell in love with the sport thereby developing a huge interest for education. When we return to our respective classes, we will share every skill and knowledge we learnt here,” she said.
The programme is held jointly with the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) and Mpira Mmudzi Mwathu (MMM), with funding from Uefa Foundation for Children.
Facilitators included MNCS Southern Region Sports Development Officer Eness Gumbo, MMM coaches Sylas Liwindo and Linda Kasenda.
