Zambia Hockey Association (ZHA) has invited Malawi’s under-21 men’s national hockey team to a three-nation tournament scheduled for June 7 to 9.
ZHA has extended the invitation, through Africa Hockey Federation, in a letter dated May 10 2024.
In the letter, ZHA General Secretary Elvis Bwalya congratulates Malawi for successfully hosting the African hockey club championship in Blantyre late last year.
“Congratulations Malawi for being the successful host of the African club championship that has left Africa with good memories of hockey. Please take it that this offer has been made to Malawi considering the fact that you’re coming from hosting a very big competition in Africa and that Malawi needs to be part of this FIH [Federation of International Hockey] sanctioned tournament,” the letter reads.
Ham General Secretary Geoff Biya said they are thinking about sending a team there.

“We are looking at ways and means of sending our team to this competition. This is a sanctioned competition which may help in improving our ranking. So, we need to be there at all cost, also considering that there is the opportunity of food and accommodation being taken care of,” Biya said.
Malawi’s men’s hockey is currently ranked 95th in the world and 10th in Africa with 253.92 points, according to latest outdoor rankings released last week.
In the women’s category, Malawi lies on position 78 in the world and 10th in Africa, having amassed 331.02 points.
Malawi National Council of Sports Public Relations and Communication Officer Edgar Ntulumbwa described Malawi’s first ever ranking in hockey as exciting.

“It shows that we, as a country, are making progress. Being ranked for the first time indicates how far we have come. Our hope is that, moving forward, we, as a country, will improve on the rankings,” Ntulumbwa said.
