Malawi has signed an agreement with the government of Luxembourg on the restoration of Malawi’s Fixed Satelite Services (FSS) Allotment.
This is the orbital resource that is used for satellite communication services including television and radio broadcasting and internet connectivity.
The signing ceremony is one of the events that took place on the sidelines of this year’s World Radio Communication Conference 2023 which took place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Minister of Education Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima said signing of the agreement marked a big step towards connecting the unconnected, especially schools and hospitals.
“This occasion brings joy to us since the signing of this agreement adds to the new Broadcasting Satellite Service (BSS) orbital resource which this conference has approved. As a country, we are going back home from this conference with great success,” she said.
Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mary Kachale said the signing ceremony added to Malawi’s space ambitions.
She said since the government seeks to digitally transform the nation using advanced technology including the use of space science and satellite communications, the partnership with Luxembourg could accelerate the provision of robust digital services.
Macra Director General Daud Suleman said the agreement would help in Malawi’s digital transformation.
The agreement has come at a time Malawi, through Macra, has embarked on projects and policy drives to effectively and efficiently transform the digital sector.
