Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Patricia Wiskies has promised to prioritise the welfare of football legends across the country.
Wiskies made the remarks when she met Football Legends Association (FLA) officials at Parliament Building in Lilongwe Friday.
She said the legends deserve respect for their contribution towards Malawi football.
“It is important to appreciate people when they are still alive. There is a lot that we can do to people who have done many things for this country,” the minister said.
She commended FLA for its efforts in improving legends’ welfare across the country.

“I fully support the association’s initiatives and commend the leadership of this group for what it is doing to improve the livelihoods of our former footballers. All factors being equal, I would watch the match between our legends and Zambia legends,” Wiskies said.
The match is slated for Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on December 28.
FLA Chairperson Jim Kalua said sharing ideas with the new minister was an honour.
Kalua said appointment of the female minister was a beacon of hope for Malawi sport.

“This is a great milestone for the country and we are proud of it. We believe this is the greatest turning point for sports in Malawi. As an association, we have made great strides since establishment.
“The legends carried Malawi flag with dedication and commitment, and made the nation proud. Our objective is to honour them beyond their playing careers,” he said.
Registered in 2021 as JK productions, FLA was established as a trusteeship with the Registrar of Companies in 2024.
The association aims at improving the welfare of former football players by empowering them beyond their active football careers.
Since 2021, FLA has rolled out a medical scheme for its registered members after signing a partnership with Medhealth.
The association also hosted its first ever annual general meeting in July in Lilongwe.
