Youth, Sports and Culture Minister Patricia Wiskes has promised to consult stakeholders on the proposal to consider removing the 5 percent gate share which the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) collects from elite football.
Wiskes made the remarks in response to Super League of Malawi (Sulom) President Gilbert Mittawa’s request.
Mittawa urged the minister to consider waiving the allocation which MNCS receives.
Speaking during the FDH Bank Premiership sponsorship announcement cocktail at Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre on Wednesday, Mittawa said teams had approached him to request the Sports Minister to waive the 5 percent gate share.
“Honourable Minister, I have been asked by Super League teams’ representatives to kindly request you to consider removing the 5 percent of gate collections which goes to Sports Council.

“During these tough economic times, the clubs feel that the percentage can help alleviate some problems. I am simply a messenger but I know that you are considerate,” Mittawa said.
In her response, Wiskes said she could not make the decision independently but consult other stakeholders.
“It is very disheartening how clubs are struggling in Malawi at the moment. We, as a ministry, will be bringing in many changes to the [sports] industry as we are reviewing how we conduct ourselves in the sports sector.
“So, these are consultative processes. We are in touch with our stakeholders to see how best we can support these clubs while also ensuring that maintenance at our sports facilities is still kept top-notch,” she said.
