Miss Malawi First Princess Irene Navicha returned home from the Miss World pageant in Vietnam Tuesday through Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe.
Navicha failed to grab the global crown for Malawi which went to Joheirry Mola of the Dominican Republic, who was crowned the 73rd Miss World.
The 24-year old educator, journalist and community advocate received the crown from Thailand’s Opal Suchata Chuangsri, the 72nd Miss World during the grand finale.
Spain’s Elisabeth Reynes was named runner up, while Taanusiya Chetty of Malaysia claimed the second runner up accolade.

Despite the setback, Navicha managed to break into the top 40, a feat that the country has failed to achieve in the previous outings.
Navicha starred for Malawi controversially ahead of the reigning queen Thandie Chisi, who was sidelined.
The first princess, who also broke a record, making it into top six in Africa, was given a tumultuous welcome at the airport which included Malawi National Dance Troupe.
She has since been offered a scholarship to pursue a Masters Degree at University of Sharda in India courtesy of Maranatha Academy where Navicha attended her secondary education.

“I am happy to be home, it has not been easy to represent the country at the pageant taking into consideration what emerged. My fellow contestants actually were asking me how I was able to concentrate amidst the concerns on the ground,” Navicha, daughter to Minister of Gender, Mary Navicha, said.
She also wrote on her social media page that she had an unforgettable month away and that this journey has given her memories that she will carry forever.
“This outing has made me appreciate where I come from and the people who loved and supported me every step of the way. I am home with a grateful heart and a suitcase full of memories,” Navicha said.
Her participation also marked Malawi’s return to the global stage after a 14- year break.
Miss Malawi Public Relations Officer Stephen Mdala said they were delighted with Navicha’s milestone.
“This is the best of its kind. Miss Malawi has never been placed in the top 40 before and that calls for a celebration,” Mdala said.
The Miss World contest which started last month attracted 111 contestants.
