Super League of Malawi (Sulom) intends to introduce midweek games in its 2024 football calendar to make up for the lost time.
Sulom has temporarily suspended the 2024 calendar as the country is on 21-day mourning period due to the death of the Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight other Malawians.
Initially, Sulom indicated that it would revise the fixtures yesterday but changed the revision to Tuesday, June 18 to ably address concerns from clubs.
“Further to the communication from the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) to release the revised fixture today [Friday], 14 June 2024, we wish to announce that the date has been revised to 18 June 2024.
“This follows the tragic passing of the State Vice President, Right Honorable Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima along with eight others and the subsequent announcement of 21 days of mourning which has necessitated cancellation of sporting activities,” the statement reads.

In the statement, Sulom appreciated the clubs for cooperating with and understanding the body during this period.
“The comprehensive review of the 2024 Super League fixture, considering concerns from clubs, will introduce midweek fixtures to catch up with the 2024 football calendar. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this difficult time,” the statement reads.

On Wednesday, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers Chief Executive Officer Panganeni Ndovi while welcoming Sulom’s rescheduling of the fixtures felt the teams were left hanging in balance.
“It was expected considering that the loss of the Right Honourable Vice President is a loss for the football fraternity and the entire Malawi.

“However, considering that the president has issued a 21-day mourning period, it is not clear on whether sporting activities should be halted for the entire period. We understand the position we are in as a country. It is a very difficult period and we stand by the decision that will be made by the football governing bodies towards ensuring that we mourn with the State President and family of the Vice President,” Ndovi, whose team was due to play against Civil Service United today at Kamuzu Stadium, said.
Meanwhile, Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) has temporarily suspended all sporting events.
