In an effort aimed at empowering girls and women to advance their artistry and contribute massively to the growth of the creative sector, Music Crossroads Malawi is back with a girls’ camp to be held this weekend in Blantyre.
Music Crossroads Malawi Director Mathews Mfune said Thursday that the girls’ camp to be held at Kairali Complex in Blantyre starts Friday and ends on Sunday.
“We have participants coming from Jacaranda and other places. We have extended invitations to girls in Blantyre,” he said.
Music Crossroads Malawi has been at the helm of girls and women empowerment programmes in the arts and prides in having an all-female band known as Daughters Band.
“We have workshops on music composition, stage management, performance, girl empowerment in the arts and gender in the arts,” Mfune said.
He said the camps which they have been rotating across the country, have proved vital in advancing the skills of the girls in the arts as they involved experienced mentors.
“This time we have mentors such as Maggie Kadrum and members from Norway. Some of the players, who are coordinating the programme, are Angellah Zulanga and Vanessa Lita,” he said.
Lita said Thursday that they were looking forward to the best of the camp which will bring together about 30 girls.
“We have girls from Jacaranda School for Orphans, girls from Dream Centre Assemblies and others. We are ready,” she said.
In another development seven members from Hear Us Children from Music Crossroads Malawi in Lilongwe left the country Thursday for Barcelona in Spain for an education and cultural exchange programme.
The group will undertake a number of activities in Spain including performing at one of the bigger festivals Saturday.
Hear Us Children is a group of boys and girls from Music Crossroads that performs different traditional dances with an aim of promoting and preserving the country’s culture.
The team expected back on April 29 2024 has travelled to Spain courtesy of Petits Musics del Mon, who are Music Crossroads Malawi partners.
