The Netball Association of Malawi’s (Nam) ‘Grassroots to Queens’ Project has received the nod from World Netball, the association has disclosed.
According to the Nam secretariat, the association’s application for World Netball Strategic Development Fund
(Phase 2) has been formally accepted by the World Netball Board.
Nam General Secretary Yamikani Khungwa-Kauma said the project, titled ‘Grassroots to Queens—A Sustainable Netball Talent and Education Pathway for Malawian Girls’, was recommended by the independent Strategic Development Fund Panel and approved by the World Netball Board during its meeting on March 26, 2026.
“While current financial constraints have placed the monetary award on hold, World Netball has committed to releasing the funding as soon as resources become available,” Khungwa- Kauma said.

World Netball Head of Governance and Member Relations Paul Smith said the board recommended that Nam’s application should be accepted.
“The Netball Association of Malawi expresses strong enthusiasm and readiness to implement the project, with preparations already underway to ensure immediate impact once funding is released,” Smith said.
Nam President Vitumbiko Gubuduza said they were thrilled that World Netball had recognised the vision and quality of the programme, which focuses on the investment in the future of Malawian girls using netball as a vehicle for education, discipline and opportunity.
“We are deeply grateful for the confidence shown [in us] by the Strategic Development Fund Panel and the World Netball Board,” she said.
