United States-based Malawian striker Temwa Chawinga scored her seventh goal of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) campaign as Kansas City Current defeated Boston Legacy 1-0 at CPKC Stadium on Saturday.
The goal means Temwa is two goals behind leading scorer, Zambian Barbara Banda of Orlando Pride.
Temwa has scored seven goals in the last five matches, including a hattrick and brace.
“She now sits second in the golden boot race with a total of seven goals and two assists. It also marked her 27th regular season goal at CPKC Stadium, the second highest total by any NWSL player at any venue in league history, trailing only Christine Sinclair (41) at Providence Park,” the Kansas City website indicates.
The win also extended Kansas City’s unbeaten run to 23 matches—the longest run in NWSL history.

Temwa was not readily available for her comment Sunday.
The Scorchers striker has excused herself from the Scorchers upcoming friendly matches against Tanzania and Ghana in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, this week due to personal reasons.
Temwa is scheduled to travel to China on a private trip despite being released for national team assignments.
She last played for the Scorchers against Zambia in February last year, when Malawi lost 2-0 to the Copper Queens in Lusaka, Zambia.

She also missed TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) qualifiers against Angola in October last year due to a groin injury.
Since her return from injury in April, Temwa has been enjoying a rich vein of form in the NWSL.
For the past two seasons in the NWSL, Temwa has smashed several records, including winning golden boot awards twice and retaining the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
In her debut season, she scored 20 goals beating Samir Kerr’s record of 18 goals.
She was also the first player in NWSL history to score against all the teams in a single regular season.
Temwa scored 15 goals last season.
