The Lilongwe Principal Resident Magistrate’s Court Thursday adjourned the case for renowned actor Phwedo to July 15 2026.
During hearing, the court dismissed the state’s application to amend the charge sheet.
Principal Resident Magistrate Benjamin Chulu said allowing the amendment at this stage would prejudice Phwedo’s right to a fair trial.
Real name Tumpe Mtaya, Phwedo is answering charges of allegedly having sex with a minor and child trafficking.

The actor, who starred in award winning movies School Days and Welcome to Maula Prison, denies the allegations.
Defence lawyer Khwima Mchizi said the state had made a second attempt to change the charge, seeking to allege the offence occurred over more than two months instead of the original date of February 18, 2025.
“If the charge sheet were amended at this stage, the particulars would be different from what the accused has been answering to and it would affect his right to challenge evidence,” Mchizi said.
Mchizi added that the court also expunged a medical report from the record after they argued it was not properly exhibited by the author.

Mchizi has since said that from July 15 the state would parade the last three witnesses in the case, including the author of the medical report, the newly admitted witness and the investigator.
