Police in Lilongwe have recovered 92 bags of fertiliser alleged to be counterfeit at a house in Sankhani Village, Traditional Authority (TA) Njewa, in the district.
However, Lilongwe Police Station spokesperson Hastings Chigalu told The Daily Times that the suspect, Mesius Thingo, is at large while the counterfeit product is being kept at Lilongwe Police Station.
“Police were tipped that Mesius Thingo was keeping the said counterfeit fertiliser in his house. After conducting a search at the house, police found 92 bags of NPK 23-10-5+6s+1Zn fertiliser bearing Falcon Company’s name.
“Upon checking the contents in all the bags, police discovered a mixture of clay soil and lime, and not genuine fertiliser,” Chigalu said.
He said they have since launched a manhunt to apprehend the suspect so that he can be taken to court to face charges related to the possession of counterfeit products.

This is the second incident related to counterfeit fertiliser in the past 11 days.
Last week, police in Kasungu District arrested 43-year-old Famous Jere for allegedly being found in possession of counterfeit fertiliser.
Eleven bags of the fertiliser are undergoing tests.
Kasungu Police Station spokesperson Joseph Kachikho said Jere was arrested after well-wishers tipped off the police that the suspect was moving 20 bags of clay soil pallets from his warehouse to an unknown destination.
