ALMOST READY—The cement plant
SHARE

Portland Cement Malawi Limited is exploring opportunities to export cement to regional markets once its new Balaka plant becomes operational.

The export ambitions are anchored on Portland Cement’s capacity expansion through its new Balaka project, which will add 800,000 tonnes per year to the company’s existing 300,000 tonnes annual capacity.

This expansion will more than triple Portland’s production capacity to over one million tonnes annually.

LIU—We will flood the local market soon

Portland Chief Executive Officer Jianguo Liu said in an interview that the company is exploring export opportunities.

Liu said exports would only commence after satisfying domestic demand.

“First is for us to commission our new project in Balaka and after we satisfy Malawi’s demand, then we will start exportation.

In an interview, one of the country’s cement distributors Nelson Kachingwe of Nels Investments said supply remains subdued, a situation leading to a rise in price of the commodity.

According to the Manufacture of Cement in Malawi 2025 report published by Researchan Markets.com, demand is outpacing supply, with imports still expected to account for almost one-third of the local market.

The report estimates Malawi’s annual cement demand at approximately 600,000 to 700,000 metric tonnes.
