New office bearers are, this month, expected to take up positions in regional football associations that are affiliated to the Football Association of Malawi (Fam).
The regional bodies will be going to the polls over a year after Fam elections that saw the affiliates replacing Walter Nyamilandu with Fleetwood Haiya.
The polls also saw Fam’s first and second vice presidents being voted out in favour of new office bearers.
It is against this background that major changes are expected in regional bodies, whose office holders were elected during Nyamilandu’s time.
Northern Region Football Association General Secretary Masiya Nyasulu said they had taken steps to hold elections this month.

“Our mandate is ending and we need to hold elections this month. We will give out more details once we meet.
“Our affiliates will also be informed accordingly about what will transpire during the meeting. But what is certain is that we will go to polls this month-end,” Nyasulu said.
Mwasinga Kaunda is the association’s current chairperson after he replaced Lameck Zetu Khonje, who was elected Fam second vice president on December 16 2023.
Central Region Football Association officials said they were yet to meet to fix a date for the elections.

They said their season was yet to wrap up.

On his part, Southern Region Football Association Chairperson Raphael Humba said they had planned to call for an extraordinary general assembly to amend their constitution in November last year.
He said they planned to do so before holding the elections.
“Our position right now is that we are not yet ready to go to the polls until we amend our constitution. This is so because of the creation of what is called Eastern Region Football Association. This means our region has been split into two and our constitution needs to be amended to reflect that change. In the first place, it’s difficult for us to go to the polls considering several scenarios, especially the constitution.
“We have not yet amended the constitution since the creation of the Eastern Region Football Association. As I am talking to you now, these districts are still affiliated to us. Secondly, our leagues are in progress and we need to finish the season and give prizes to the teams before holding elections,” Humba said.
Haiya announced the formation of the new association during Fam’s Annual General Assembly held in Mangochi District in June last year.
The association’s member districts will be Balaka, Mangochi, Machinga, Zomba and Phalombe.
