By Pemphero Malimba:
Speaker of The Gambia’s Parliament, Fabakary Tombong Jatta, has urged members of Parliament (MPs) in the country to prioritise the needs of their constituents during their deliberations.
Jatta made this statement in Parliament in Lilongwe Thursday, when he led a delegation of Gambian MPs on a learning and benchmarking mission to Malawi.
The delegation included members of the business committee of the Gambian Parliament.
He said the public expects MPs to pass laws and prioritise policies that improve their livelihoods.

“Our citizens do not judge parliaments by the elegance of our chambers, but by the impact of our decisions. They want laws that improve lives. They want oversight that protects public resources. They want representation that reaches the furthest village,” he said.
He said Malawi served as a model for many countries, including The Gambia.
“We envisage the establishment of a Parliamentary Friendship Group between The Gambia and Malawi to foster regular dialogue and cooperation,” he said.
The Speaker of Malawi’s Parliament, Sameer Suleman, commended the Gambian delegation for their visit.
